On July 23, 2026, the FAA announced it is moving forward with Mobile Clearance, enabling general and business aviation pilots to request IFR departure clearances through approved flight applications instead of via radio.
The agency began operational evaluation in Houston in May 2026 and expanded this summer to Appleton, Wisconsin, and New Century, Kansas, with additional sites planned for the fall.
The FAA notes that digital clearances are intended to reduce readback errors and help air traffic controllers focus on aircraft movement and runway safety.
Cancellation of IFR via participating apps is expected to begin in August, with a broader U.S. rollout planned ahead of nationwide deployment starting in 2027.
